If you give students a school where people care about what they say, where adults challenge them to
make their words clear, true, and strong, and where their work makes a visible difference in the lives of
others, then you’ve built a community in which everyone pushes herself or himself toward ever higher
goals. Education becomes real—and the world you want to build starts to happen, before you have even
left 5th grade.

At the Uphams Corner Charter School, a tuition-free, public school open to all, you’ll find a small,
intense community dedicated to these radical ideas. Here, we believe that every child is a natural
philosopher, wondering about her world and searching for ways to make her ideas clear. And we believe
a rigorous, liberal arts education is the surest way to make her voice strong. We teach the classics
– Latin, Shakespeare, Frederick Douglass – because we know they are the best way to make radical
change in the 21st century. As students open their minds to the joy of learning, thought, and expression,
they gain the power to make their voices heard in the world, and they grow in compassion to use those
voices for the good of others.
