The student Senate at Uphams Corner Charter
School is composed of two student-elected repre-
sentatives from each class. The Senate meets
weekly during snack time, and deliberates on matters
ranging from school policy to self-discipline. The
Senate regularly makes changes to school policy in
the best interests of their school and their constituents.
The last two weeks of school are devoted to "work in
the field." This year, students spent two days in
Uphams Corner interviewing residents, business
owners, and passersby in order to discover what, if any-
thing, Uphams Corner lacks in services and amenities.
Each group of students assessed the information they
collected, and made a decision about which area to
explore. One group of students elected to continue last
year’s trash investigation; another decided to follow up

on the concern of several residents that not enough of their neighbors vote regularly; a third group explored the
steps needed to increase the number of neighborhood gardens; and a fourth devoted themselves to a campaign
designed to encourage Uphams Corner children–and adults–to read at least one book during the summer. At
the end of the project, students presented their findings, plan of action, and supporting data to the entire school.

Why I Would Be A Good Leader
By Saul Nunez, First House

I would be a great leader because I care about this facility as if it was part of my family. I wouldn’t just drop a candy
wrapper on the floor. I try cleaning up bathrooms as if its my own room. I would stand tall like Abraham "Honest
Abe" Lincoln. I would clean every shoe mark on the floor or walls. I would make sure my job is my top priority as if
I were a USA Secret Service member. I would be a symbol of the Uphams Corner Charter School. I would fix the
walls of honesty. I will destroy the plague of gum chewing. I will shred the horde of running stampedes. I will follow
my task like a snake or lion about to eat its prey. I will not tolerate inappropriate behavior.

Where I’m From
By Jerdrema Flynt, Class of Truth

I am from open seas
and bouncing music
the Caribbean sunsets
with rainbow colors

The Florida ocean is wide
but peace can keep you in
then push you out

Then we have
Alabama countryside
that makes you talk southern
with the silence and crickets singing

not like Boston
the loud dirty cries from babies and
exhausted moms

I am from Speedy Gonzales
felines from dark alleys
and crowded corners of
beautiful, dramatic animals

I am from the rowdy family that loves
everyone that can never throw somebody away

I’m from the planet that
dreams and the hopes that will and can
always come true

I’m from the magical
ice cream land and
any ice cream that you
wish for, will appear
in your hands
